At the beginning of May this year, the eyes of the world were focussed on the United Kingdom. Hundreds and thousands of people visited the country to experience the Coronation at first hand, and the royal event attracted the largest television audience of all times – over 100 million viewers worldwide. The authorities understandably did not wish the positive impression to be overshadowed by any signs of opposition in the form of demonstrations, for example by antimonarchists with banners and t-shirts bearing the words Not My King To prevent his, the police made use of a law that – as chance would have it – was passed only three days before the Coronation enabling them to arrest any person they assumed (!) might wish to cause a public nuisance. The result was: a number of people were arrested before they had committed any crime, and kept behind bars – in some cases for up to 16 hours – after which the police simply issued a public apology for mistakes they had made.
