Veranstalter: Deutsch-Britische Gesellschaft in Kooperation mit Europa-Union Dortmund

During the last 20 years, the political situation in both the United Kingdom and in Germany has changed dramatically. In both countries volatility has replaced stability, and Prime Ministers and Bundeskanzler no longer seem to have the authority they used to have. And the elections that used to produce two major parties now result in parliaments with up to five moderately sized parties with more or less the same share of the votes.

This is the starting point for our next event, which we are organising together with the Europa-Union in Dortmund as part of our series of Anglo-German meetings comparing life in the United Kingdom and Germany. After a brief look at the status quo on the basis of the recent regional elections in Germany and this year’s byelections in the UK, we will be looking at the present situation and the possible future developments and discussing the reasons and the consequences.
This meeting will be hybrid, i.e. live in Dortmund and online for people in Leeds and the UK, to enable people from both sides of the North Sea to exchange views and to ask each other questions in order to establish where there are similarities and where there are differences between the two countries.
