Even though the reason for celebrating Christmas is basically the same in both countries, there are a few differences between Christmas in Germany and the UK.
For example, try shopping for the last-minute present or getting the local bus into town in Germany after 2.00 pm on Christmas Eve; whereas in the UK the supermarkets will still be open till around 7.00 pm and public transport will still be running until late in the evening. On the other hand, try travelling on public transport (bus, tube or rail) on Christmas Day or even Boxing Day. You can fly to London, but unless you take a taxi, you may well spend the rest of the Christmas holiday at the airport! In Germany, no problem. There will be a normal Sunday timetable for your onward journey.
But our Anglo-German Xmas afternoon will focus on the positives: How do people in the UK and Germany celebrate? The same food? The same drinks? The same hymns and songs?
We will be asking people from Leeds and from Dortmund how they spend Christmas Eve, Christmas and Boxing Day, and learn about the similarities and differences.
And people who attend the meeting in person, will be able to indulge in British Christmas delicacies!
