Humor is generally a difficult topic. Some countries are known worldwide for their sense of humor – like the British, for example. Other countries, like Germany, wouldn't necessarily rank among the top three in any international ranking! Cf. Die Welt, June 9, 2011: (The Germans are the least funny nation).
But what about political humor? Political humour is booming in the public media in Germany; both the state-owned and private television stations continually compete with each other by offering an increasing number of satirical programmes, many of which dominate the viewing rankings.
In this event, we will be looking at various examples from both Germany and the United Kingdom and address questions such as: What do people from the UK and from Germany like to laugh about? Are there differences in political satire in the two countries? And, if so, what are they?
We look forward to welcoming you to this evening of international humour and hope that the wide range of examples will not only bring a smile to your lips but will also help you to both understand and appreciate people’s sense of humour in these two countries.
The meeting jointly organised by the Volkshochschule Dortmund (College of Adult Education) and the Anglo-German Society will also take place online.
