There are a number of significant differences between local elections in Germany and Great Britain. For example, in the UK, people vote almost every year, always on the first Thursday in May, whereas in Germany the elections take place only once every five years, as in September 2025, and always on a Sunday. And, unlike Germany, there are in the UK frequent by-elections, all of which means that the party in power in any local council can sometimes change very quickly.
After a general introduction to the two systems and a discussion of the pros and cons, we will look at the present political situation in the two twin cities Dortmund and Leeds and consider questions such as: Who is in power? Which parties are represented? What percentage of the seats does each party have? Which issues dominate? Are there parallels between the two cities?
You will also have the opportunity to put any questions you may have to residents of your twin city , and offer any comments you wish.
We look forward to seeing you at the meeting, which will also take place online.
You are invited to bring along any questions that you may have (in English or German) and to take an active part by joining in the discussion.
