The question people normally ask after any Election Day is: Who’s the Winner? But after this year’s German Bundestag Election, a more appropriate question may be: Who are the losers? as potentially there could be far more losers than winners – both on the level of the political parties, most of whom did less well than they had hoped for, and in terms of the voters, who in view of the unusually weak situation that the German economy is going through at the present time, might end up being The Biggest Losers!
We all now know the result in terms of the number of votes, the name of the new Chancellor and the party that will probably join him in a coalition to form the new federal government.
But what does this result mean? For the German people, for Europe, for the political parties? What changes can be expected from any new government? What are the main national, European and global issues to be tackled in the first twelve months? What are the prospects for the next four years?
Journalists from all over the world have already given their 'instant' judgements and assessments. But perhaps an equally if not more important question is: How does the 'man/woman on the street' feel about the outcome?
In this meeting, people from Dortmund, where the result is slightly different to the national trend, will be giving their personal reactions and expressing their personal hopes and expectations for the next four years. Our friends from Dortmund’s twin city Leeds will have a unique opportunity to ask questions and discuss the new situation with their Dortmund friends.
This event will be held online, to enable as many people as possible from both Leeds and Dortmund to attend.
We look forward to seeing you at the meeting, which will take place in English. You are invited to bring along any questions you may have and to take an active part by joining in the discussion.
